Backgroundin 1881, a patent was issued to ephraim shay for his invention of the shay gear-driven steam locomotive. The gear-driven steam locomotive is a type of steam locomotive which uses reduction gearing in the drivetrain, as opposed to the common directly-driven design. Having been in the saw-mill business, shay saw the need for a better way to move harvested logs from the forest to the mill. To this end, he designed an engine that was suitable for logging trains, which typically carry heavy payloads at low speeds over ruogh terrain. The shay gear-driven steam locomotive was manufactured by lima locomotive works from 1881 to 1945. This is a museum-quality patent reproduction obtained directly from the united states patent & trademark office (uspto).
