From the fort street union depot ni detroit michigan. Built in 1893 the depot serviced the flint & pere marquette, wabash & detroit lansing & northern, thru the years & various mergers it continued to serve the needs of the chesapeake & ohio, pere marqueete, wabash, norfolk & western, & the pennsylvania. Home to many famous trains like the wabash cannonball, the capitol limited, the cinncinatian, and of course the two trains represented by this sign. The sportsman which carried many vacationers to the famous greenbrier resorts, not to mention the gm officials who regularly enjoyed the greenbrier & held many annual mtgs there. The other side is the famous pere marqueete deluxe streamliner recently honored by amtrak when they began running the pere marqueete from grand rapids to chicago. Two famous trains on one signs. Signs like this were placed to hlep direct passengers to their train, most were double sided and hung from a rack.
And weer easily changed. Passengers were directed out to the train shed to begin there journey. The last departure from the fort street union depot was on may 1, 1971, the depot was tore down begining jan 1974.
Gone to the history books, pictures and fond memories of those who worked there and the passengers who marveled at its beauty. Gone but not forgotten because this sign brnigs back those glorious days steam railroading and families enjoying a ride. After 34 eyars of hanging in my train room i have decided to pass it on to another lucky collector. Made of aluminum, paprox 18 lbs, 23 wide & 45 long it is without a doubt a one of a kind. On the c&o side you can see teh word sportsman is faded or someone tried to remove it.
